With the federal government rapidly approaching the debt ceiling, most of Congressional leadership’s time has been dedicated to negotiation a way to avoid default. After weeks of failed compromises and false starts, Senate Majority Leader Reid unveiled his plan to raise the limit by $2.7 trillion through a combination of deep domestic cuts and raised revenues on Monday morning. By the afternoon, Speaker of the House Boehner released his version of the plan, which requires the Congress to vote on a balanced budget amendment. These developments leave the two chambers six working days to work through the differences and get a bill to President Obama’s desk by the August 2 default date.

Congressional Republicans, doing the bidding of Tea Party fanatics, are holding the U.S. economy hostage to their demand to slash vital programs like Social Security and Medicare while continuing to give away billions in corporate welfare and tax subsidies to big business. They are threatening to vote as a bloc against raising the U.S. debt ceiling before the August 2 deadline, unless the Obama Administration and Democrats agree to trillions of dollars in cuts to these essential programs without touching corporate tax giveaways. At the same time, the jobs crisis is getting worse.

A question for GOP governors: How’s that “bash-the-workers” thing working out for you?

Not so well, according to public opinion polls. Republican governors leading the charge to cut health care, gut pensions, and cancel bargaining rights for public employees have seen their approval ratings tank.

Rick Scott, who cut $8 billion from Florida’s education budget and is attacking workplace rights for classroom teachers, has a rock-bottom 29 percent approval rating.

Senate leadership chose to forgo their planned July 4 vacation this week, placing both chambers in session this week. In the House, the Defense Appropriations will be brought to the floor, while the Senate debates a resolution on the US’s involvement in Libya. Senate Republicans boycotted the mark-ups of the three pending free trade bills, angry over short notice the week before a holiday and the inclusion of Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) for workers affected by outsourcing. This week the House will hold its own mark-ups, with the TAA provision excluded.
