On December 8 and 9, the TWU ATD Veterans Committee co-led the distribution of hundreds upon hundreds of holiday gifts and necessities to wounded soldiers and their families at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, TX. Working since the summer, the committee raised $8,000 and brought in hundreds of donations from TWU locals across the country.

On October 21, 2013, the United States Bankruptcy Court overseeing American Airlines chapter 11 bankruptcy case entered an order confirming American Airlines chapter 11 plan.  There has been some confusion about what the confirmation order means for American’s 40,000 plus retirees and their benefits.  The fact is that the entry of the confirmation order will not change all that much for retirees.

Today my thoughts and prayers and those of the TWU family go out to the family of Transportation Security Administration agent Gerardo Hernandez, who was the first TSA agent to be killed in the line of duty. It happened last Friday at Los Angeles International Airport, and by now you all know the story. A young gunman walked into the airline terminal, firing an assault weapon, and specifically targeting TSA employees. He killed Mr. Hernandez and wounded three more before being subdued by police.

TWU’s Working Women’s Committee (WWC) of the Air Transport Division donned hard hats, picked up hammers and went to work building a home with Habitat for Humanity on October 22 during their three-day meeting in Fort Worth, Texas.
Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit that selects deserving families in need of decent shelter to work alongside volunteers and professionals, building their own house from the ground up. WWC also served as an official sponsor of the Trinity Habitat for Humanity Women Build, where TWU women from across the country helped give future homeowner Lizzie Mae Thornton, and her family, a new beginning.

On October 29th, one year to the day after Hurricane Sandy barreled through New York City, TWU International President Harry Lombardo delivered a rousing call to action at Local 100's Rally for a Fair Contract. Approximately 5,000 Local 100 members converged outside of MTA headquarters at 2 Broadway, shutting down street after street between City Hall and the Financial District. The transit workers were joined by half a dozen TWU locals from every division, along with scores of New York labor leaders and politicians.

Responding to reports that Allegiant frequently abandons routes and cancels service, union members will ask if Allegiant’s proposed expansion of service to and from Punta Gorda is “A trick or a treat?”

Moving forward, the International will seek the input of local leadership at every step in negotiations with employers. To this end, the new TWU leadership called a historic summit meeting on October 22 of the entire ATD for the first time in recent history to find common ground and chart a way forward on issues of collective concern.

Bus driver assaults are on the rise, causing unacceptably high rates of injury and worker anxiety.  Making this work even more stressful, many bus drivers are not provided enough time in their workday for the bathroom breaks most Americans take for granted. The time has come for federal authorities, labor and management to sit down and find solutions to these problems.

The Transport Workers Union of America (TWU) has taken legal action in federal court to protect the jobs, pay and benefits of its members, TWU President Harry Lombardo said today.

TWU, Lombardo said, is seeking intervenor status in a lawsuit filed by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) against the proposed merger of American Airlines and U.S. Airways. The case will go forward despite the current government shutdown, under terms of an order issued on Oct. 1 by U.S. District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly.

TWU members, who will wear t-shirts highlighting Allegiant’s “Delayed Service, Cancelled Routes and Abandoned Cities,” are concerned about ongoing customer service issues at the Las Vegas-based discount carrier. On Sept. 11, 2001, Flight 93 crashed in Pennsylvania as the crew members and passengers prevented an attack on our nation’s capitol.

Twelve years later on the eve of that day, TWU members, some accompanied by their children, joined over 30 flight attendants from seven different carriers to request that members of Congress make voluntary personal contributions to close a $1.5 million funding gap for the Flight 93 National Memorial which officially opened to the public on September 10, 2011.

Earlier today the Transport Workers Union of America released a statement regarding an incident with Southwest Airlines Flight 345 where a Boeing 737 experienced difficulty with its landing gear at New York’s LaGuardia Airport. That statement did not properly reflect the position of our union.
TWU represents thousands of workers at Southwest including flight attendants, aircraft dispatchers and the majority of ground workers. We’re proud and protective of our members at Southwest and we're also proud of our long productive relationship with Southwest Airlines management.

On May 28, 2013, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters-Airline Division (IBT) filed an application and authorization cards alleging a representation dispute involving the Mechanics and Related Employees of American Airlines (Carrier). The employees in question are currently represented by the Transport Workers Union (TWU). Also on May 28, 2013, the Carrier filed a List of Potential Eligible Voters (List) and signature samples of the potential eligible voters.
