Transport Union President Slams American Airlines: Is This How Business Is Done?
 
Washington, D.C. – Following yesterday’s announcement of the closing of Texas Aero Engine Service Limited (TAESL), a joint American Airlines – Rolls Royce engine repair facility in Fort Worth, Texas, that will result in the loss of as many as 500 union jobs, Transport Workers Union of America International President Harry Lombardo issued the following statement:

“While we’re not especially surprised by the news that American Airlines and Rolls Royce have decided to close this facility, we are disappointed that several hundred of our members will soon be losing their livelihoods. Our mechanics are indeed the best and the brightest, and as their union, we’ll do whatever it takes to make sure they land on their feet.

TWU has represented workers on New York City’s Gray Line tourist buses for over 50 years. In 2009, the company merged with another company whose workers were represented by a different union, the United Service Workers. The recent election was TWU’s attempt to keep the relationship between the two companies from eroding TWU’s contractual standards, and from subtracting from the number of jobs and job opportunities available to our members.

TWU locals from across divisions came together with TWU International to support Local 225 in the fight of its life, battling for 500+ members and the reputation and integrity of our union.

As part of the IAC’s commitment to assessing international staff capacities and taking TWU to the next level, we promised to build out a professional, capable communications department that could help us interact with members, share information, and run winning campaigns with strong messages that reach the right audiences. With the addition of two more staff members, our Communications Department has grown to incorporate additional skills and talents to round out our top-notch team.

The TWU Veterans Committee will once again support Operation Military Embrace’s annual “Operation Free PX” drive, which collects clothing, household items and funds for wounded warriors recovering at San Antonio Military Medical Center in Texas. Each year, TWU locals from around the country donate their time, resources and generous gifts to benefit nearly 21,000 soldiers and their families during the holiday season.

TWU Executive Vice President & Local 100 President John Samuelsen and NYC's Corporation Council have signed a legal agreement clarifying the intent of a controversial Vision Zero law that has led to the arrest of six Bus Operators.
 
The agreement, Samuelsen said, will protect bus operators from being charged criminally after pedestrian crosswalk accidents that are just that – accidents that were not caused by driver recklessness.
