Carl Martin has been an active member and officer of TWU since being hired as a bus mechanic for the Ann Arbor Transit Authority in 1987. His union calling, which started in 1981 when he served as a shop steward for the United Auto Workers in a previous job, blossomed for TWU in 1988 when he was named Vice President for Maintenance for Local 171 in Ann Arbor, MI.
He served the local on the contract negotiating team in 1989 and 1992, and was elected local president in 1994, a position he held until 2003 when he joined the International staff as an International Representative on a full-time basis.
Martin has taken numerous labor-related courses covering collective bargaining, arbitration, political action and public speaking at Wayne State University in Detroit and at the National Labor College in Silver Spring, MD.
As an International Representative, Martin is responsible for delivering the International’s services to locals in Ohio, Michigan, Nebraska, Georgia, North Carolina and Pennsylvania, in Locals 1, 171, 208, 212, 220, 222, 223, 248, 258, 282, 289, 290, 700, 249, 295, and 299.
