AFL-CIO Executive Council Civil Rights Meeting
The National AFL-CIO held its Executive Council Meetings, March 4-9, 2007 in Las Vegas Nev. I attended the Civil/Human Rights meeting along with President Jim Little and Legislative Representative Portia White. Linda Chavez-Thompson officer of the AFL-CIO chaired the meeting. The report presented to the council by Ms. Chavez-Thompson commented on the Diversity Resolution adopted by the AFL-CIO Executive Council last year which encouraged Internationals to add more women and minorities to their boards. There was also discussion on the make-up of the AFL-CIO National Executive Board. That the board needs to be more diversified.
It was suggested the AFL-CIO hold Regional Civil/Human Rights meetings in the spring and summer. Top Local and Regional AFL-CIO staff would facilitate the meetings.
A report was given on the Martin Luther King Celebration held January 12-15, 2007 in Houston Texas. It was reported it was possible the largest attendance in the history of the celebration. There were over 600 union participates. TWU and USW seemed to be competing to see who had the most in attendance. There was also discussion on unions needed to get involved in donating to the fund. Union members will be asked to participate in making donations during the Regional Civil/Human Rights Meetings.
More discussion was had on the AFL-CIO Diversity Resolution Policy. Some delegates felt some Internationals were not utilizing the policy in their Internationals. It was discussed that some Internationals did not fall under the policy, because of their union make-up (i.e. United Steel Workers, USW are predominately a white-Anglo male union).
It was encouraged that all Internationals work at utilizing the Diversity Resolution policy. Ms. Chavez-Thompson again reviewed that the purpose of the policy is to have Internationals place more women and minorities in high leadership positions.
The report was approved by the council.
