Education Department
The
Education Department provides training
and educational services to TWU local
unions. Working with International
staff, local union officers, and local
union education committees, the
department designs programs tailored to
the needs of local unions. These
programs might include grievance
handling for shop stewards or leadership
training for local officers.

TWU
recently conducted a New Officers'
Training Class at the National Labor
College,
the AFL-CIO's training center in
Silver Spring, Maryland. The
newly-elected officers spent
a week learning administrative and
leadership skills. The class is
sponsored by the
International and open to all
newly-elected officers who are
nominated by their local.
The class is conducted once a year
in January.
Since 1990,
the Education Department has trained or
assisted in the training of well over
7,000 shop stewards and also provided
information to various local unions for
internal training by the local.
The department also offers programs at
the AFL-CIO's George Meany Center for
Labor Studies for local union officers.
These programs are announced through
mailings to all locals and prospective
candidates are nominated by the local
unions. The week-long residential
programs are held at the Meany Center in
Silver Spring, Maryland. Since the
Department began using the Meany Center
in 1994, TWU has trained over 750 local
union officers in different leadership
skills.
Serving as a clearing house for
education services, the department
strives to provide timely information
and training on all aspects of
membership and leadership education.

Research Department
Using a
variety of techniques, the department
provides immediate data to bolster
negotiators' case at the bargaining
table, as well as economic and financial
analyses of broader issues (such as
Federal funding of mass transit) which
have a profound impact on members’ jobs
and paychecks. The department also
undertakes special projects requested by
the International or individual locals.
More and more, TWU and other unions are
using sophisticated financial research
to track potential organizing targets.
