Ways to Ruin a Local Union
I was going through some old copies of the TWU newspaper recently and found this list in a 1940 edition. The title was, "A Member Suggests Ways to Ruin a Union." I don’t know who wrote it, but the problems of a local union sixty years are not that different from those of today.
  • Don't pay your union dues.
  • Don't wear your union button.
  • Don't attend meetings, but if you do, arrive late.
  • Be sure to sit in the back, so you can talk to those near you and have a little meeting of your own.
  • Be sure to leave before the meeting ends, so that you won't know what was decided.
  • Never have anything to say at the meeting; wait until you are outside, in a saloon or a garage.
  • When you attend a meeting, vote to do everything, then go home and do nothing.
  • The next day, find fault with your steward, and all the other officers of the union.
  • Take no part in the activities of the union.
  • Get all you can from your union, but don't give the union anything.
  • Talk cooperation, but never cooperate.
  • If you are asked to help, say that you have no time.
  • Never read anything pertaining to your union. You may become enlightened.
  • Never do anything for the union. It is easier to criticize than do things.
  • If you are appointed to a committee, forget about it.
  • Don't ever do anything more than you have to, especially when there are others who willingly and unselfishly use their ability and time to help the cause of the union, then howl that the union is run by a clique.
  • Say your boss or supervisor can do more for you than the union. He's your pal.
