Turbulent times continue for TWU's Railroad Division and most rail unions despite strong profits in the freight railroad industry and increasing popularity of Amtrak for business and pleasure travel. The challenges came from several fronts, including a Congress more concerned about an elusive balanced budget than the future of the nation's only intercity passenger railroad; and greedy managements driven by ever higher profit margins rather than the good and welfare of those who earned the profit for them.

Despite these serious problems, the Railroad Division's membership numbers have remained stable, and we have chalked up important victories.

Union Tank Car
Local 2017 in Altoona, PA represents numerous job titles at the Union Tank Car Co. there.

MBTA--Boston
Local 2054 represents hundreds of workers who maintain the substantial fleet of rail commuter cars for the "T" commuter railroad in Boston. The operating company is the Massachusetts Bay Commuter Railroad.

Metro North Commuter Railroad
TWU represents the Carmen, Coach Cleaners, Carpenters and Service Workers on this busy New York MTA commuter line.
