Las Vegas
– Dealers at Wynn Las Vegas casino
resort were celebrating today after
voting overwhelmingly for representation
by the Transport Workers Union of
America (TWU).
“This is
the beginning of history being made,”
said Josephine Tang, one of 60 members
of the worker’ organizing committee. “We
will be part of one voice that speaks
loud and clear on issues that affect our
pay, benefits, job security, our
livelihoods and future.”
The 444-149
vote for the union was a clear rejection
of Wynn management’s efforts to force
the dealers to share their tips with pit
bosses, and it was personal rebuke to
owner Steve Wynn, who had made a last
minute appeal to the dealers.
“We’re very
proud of these resort workers,” said TWU
International President James C. Little.
“Their vote for representation by TWU is
a real credit to their solidarity. They
stuck together because they want to
protect their future. We’re looking
forward to helping them get a good
contract that does just that. It’s time
for the casino and the union to put
their cards on the table.”
The
National Labor Relations Board
sanctioned the election early Sunday.
Transport
Workers Union of America (TWU)
represents 130,000 workers primarily in
transportation and customer service.
The union is an affiliate of the
AFL-CIO. |
