TWU COPE: Communicating With TWU Members
Before endorsing a candidate, the TWU COPE Committee is guided by reports and information provided by:
- National AFL-CIO
- State AFL-CIO
- Local Central Councils
- TWU Local Presidents and Executive Boards
In campaigns we have numerous ways of contacting our members and delivering our message:
- distributing literature
- personal one-on-one
- direct mail
- TWU Express, Local Newsletter and COPE Reader
- union bulletin board
- door-to-door canvass
- telephone
- D.C. Legislative Office
One-way communication such as direct mail, union bulletin board, newsletter and leaflets allows the local leadership to deliver a message to the membership, but never allows for feedback on whether the message worked or how it was received.
The only three methods we have of identifying voter sentiment and establishing two-way communication is through telephone contact, door-to-door canvassing and one-on-one. In order to deliver a message about a TWU COPE endorsed candidate or issues to our members, all methods of communication are a necessity.
A union member needs to receive multiple and varied types of contacts before deciding to vote for a candidate. Statistically, union members who were contacted about our COPE endorsed candidates by:
- MAIL -- turned out to vote 83% of the time
- TELEPHONE --turned out to vote 84% of the time
- PERSONAL CONTACT -- turned out to vote 93% of the time
