The Transport Workers Union of America is organizing Custodians, Receiving Clerks and Housekeepers at Weill Cornell Medicine in New York City after an overwhelming majority of workers filed for union recognition with the National Labor Relations Board this week. TWU International is working in conjunction with TWU Local 241 on the organizing effort.
“The TWU is ready and excited to work with Weill Cornell Custodians, Receiving Clerks and Housekeepers along with TWU Local 241 to win a first contract that improves economic security for the workers and their families,” said TWU International President John Samuelsen. “We look forward to a successful election.”
TWU Local 241 represents workers at Columbia University and other affiliated institutions. The NLRB will set a date for an election and a majority vote will enable the TWU to negotiate a first contract. The TWU has a long history of organizing workers in New York City, beginning with the union’s founding in 1934.
