Flight Dispatchers at Avelo Airlines voted Wednesday to join the Transport Workers Union of America, increasing the TWU’s footprint in representation of Flight Dispatchers across the country.
“Our immediate next step is to win that all-important first contract that will significantly improve the quality of life for Avelo Flight Dispatchers and their families,” said TWU International President John Samuelsen. “The TWU’s strength in organizing new work groups and bargaining game-changing contracts continues to pay off as more workers vote to join the TWU.”
Wednesday’s overwhelming vote of support in the National Mediation Board election among workers at the Houston-based ultra-low cost carrier is the latest TWU organizing victory for airline workers.
Last month, the TWU successfully organized Bus Operators working for a Delta subsidiary at John F. Kennedy International Airport and Flight Instructors at PSA Airlines. In February, the TWU expanded its presence at Orlando International Airport by successfully organizing Fuelers working at the contractor PrimeFlight in a unanimous vote.
The TWU currently represents Flight Dispatchers at Alaska Airlines, Envoy Airlines, Frontier Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines, Horizon Airlines, Kalitta Airlines, Omni Airlines, PSA Airlines, Republic Airlines, Southwest Airlines, Sun Country Airlines and UPS Airlines.
“We will begin work to ratify a first contract that addresses long-standing quality-of-life issues and pay imbalances,” said TWU Organizing Director Angelo Cucuzza. “The TWU will continue to show why it is the largest airline employee union in the country by vigorously negotiating a groundbreaking first contract.”
