Washington, D.C. – In response to the release of the Senate Democrats’ Jobs & Infrastructure Plan for America’s Workers, Transport Workers Union, AFL-CIO (TWU) International President John Samuelsen issued the following statement:
“We commend the Senate Democrats for the plan they released today that proposes to invest $1 trillion in our country’s infrastructure. The Jobs & Infrastructure Plan for America’s Workers would give a shot in the arm to our public transit systems by boosting programs to help repair and grow this important public service. The plan also props-up the Highway Trust Fund to ensure its solvency for the next decade, makes wise investments in Amtrak and our rail infrastructure to modernize this network, and bolsters funding to help meet the needs of a 21st century aviation system.
“Critically, this boosts infrastructure spending while maintaining longstanding worker protections and safeguards against privatization schemes that are harmful to workers and the traveling public.
“TWU members work on the frontlines of our country’s transportation systems and are keenly aware of the dire need for a massive federal investment in our infrastructure. This plan makes prudent proposals to meet this need, and we look forward to working with lawmakers to build a comprehensive, pro-worker infrastructure package.”
