The TWU Endorses the House FAA Reauthorization Bill
Washington, DC—John Samuelsen, International President of the Transport Workers Union of America (TWU), issues this statement in support of H.R. 3935, as amended, the Securing Growth and Robust Leadership in American Aviation Act:
“The Securing Growth and Robust Leadership in American Aviation Act, offered by the bipartisan leadership of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, will make our national air space safer, improve the working conditions of airline workers, and return good, union jobs to the U.S.
“This bill will increase safety and security standards at foreign aircraft maintenance facilities, ending FAA incentives that have long driven airlines to offshore good, union jobs. It installs meaningful protections against the threat of assault on the job; rejects an attempt by airlines to exempt themselves from state labor standards; helps to ensure aircraft cabin air is safe and free from toxic fumes or harmful chemicals; and ends the unsafe practice of dispatching commercial aircraft from unsecure locations. These important provisions will strengthen our national airspace and ensure commercial air travel remains the safest form of transportation.
“While the TWU will be supporting a series of perfecting amendments to further improve the bill, this legislation prioritizes the needs of airline workers and will save lives. The TWU calls on members of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee to hold the line and advance this important legislation through the markup process and to resist the inevitable efforts by corporate bosses to place a higher value on profiteering over worker and passenger safety.”
