The TWU Supports Phil Washington to Lead the FAA
As the largest airline union in the U.S., the TWU strongly supports Phil Washington to lead the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Washington’s nomination demonstrates, yet again, that President Biden is committed to appointing leaders who have the faith and trust of working people. We appreciate Captain Billy Nolan’s leadership during his time as interim FAA Administrator.
The FAA is facing massive problems in our air system – many of which have been ignored by previous administrators for years. Airlines, manufacturers, and repair stations treat the agency like their fiefdom rather than their regulator. There are dozens of overdue Congressional mandates awaiting rulemakings. And the entire airline industry is losing workers to other careers with fewer assaults and better pay and benefits from day one on the job.
Phil Washington has a long history of working with unions to improve our transportation systems. He has been one of the strongest voices for creating and sustaining high-quality jobs with government investment – including when transitioning to new technologies. Washington is the leader we need to raise safety standards on aircraft maintenance, eliminate worker assaults onboard aircraft and at airports, and responsibly integrate uncrewed vehicles and new air mobility business models into our skies.
