President Trump has nominated Ninth Circuit Court Judge Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court to replace the late Justice Antonin Scalia. As Members of Congress from both sides meet with Judge Gorsuch in advance of his confirmation hearings, the Washington Post has already said, if confirmed, Gorsuch might be the most conservative justice on the Supreme Court.
During the 2016 election, filling Supreme Court vacancies was a major campaign issue for both candidates, and as union members, the decisions made by the court can have a direct impact on our ability to organize and bargain collectively, collect dues, and go after corporations that mistreat their workers. Our original assessment suggests that Judge Gorsuch has a long record of siding on behalf of big business, not every day working people – but we’ll continue to monitor his confirmation hearings and keep you updated on the process. In the meantime, you can read more about Neil Gorsuch in this blog post from the AFL-CIO.
