Members of the TWU Texas State Conference showed their support for state Sen. Wendy Davis on October 3 as she announced her run for Texas Governor.
Sen. Davis has been a strong advocate for TWU members. Just recently, she opposed the Dept. of Justice’s stance on blocking the American Airlines and U.S. Airways merger. She acknowledged and noted the personal sacrifices TWU members have already gone through to keep the company viable.
Sen. Davis also supported the Lily Ledbetter Act and voted against privatization and against misclassification of workers.
“Wendy is the real deal,” said Valerie Boy of the Texas State Conference and Local 556. “I can identify with her. They may call her an underdog, but I know if we all work together, she will be the next Governor of Texas.”
Next year’s governor’s race will be a priority for the Texas State Conference. It will be a hard fought race with the TWU Texas State Conference front and center, as two polls show her within single digits of her likely opponent, Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott, who is the driving force behind the DOJ lawsuit against the merger.
In 2012, the TWU Texas State Conference worked closely with the Texas AFL-CIO knocking on doors, phone banking, and distributing campaign signs reaching out to 7000 Union members in Sen. Davis’ Senate District 10. She was re-elected to the Texas Senate by roughly 7000 votes.
“Wendy has always been a strong advocate for working families in Texas,” said James Gardner of the Texas State Conference and Local 513. “I am particularly proud of her filibuster in 2011 that forced a special session to try to restore millions of dollars in public school funding that had been cut.”
